In this week's newsletter, I wanted to share with you a bit more about one of the gorgeous places we saw while in England, the Goodwood Estate.

It's a 12,000 acre estate in south England, home to the Dukes of Richmond and Lennox since the late 1600s.

On the sprawling estate you can find an extensive private art collection, a member's only restaurant at The Kennel Club, golf course, a huge organic farm, and the boutique Goodwood Hotel.

It's also the home of multiple motor car races as well as the Rolls Royce Factory. So yes, this place has a lot to see.

It's the hotel I want to share a bit more about though, as we spent one glorious evening there at the start of our trip.

The day after we landed in London, we drove south to visit one of my husband's clients in nearby Chichester. He was the one who suggested we spend our evening at the Goodwood, and I'm so thankful he did.

Not only was our dinner at The Kennel Club amazing and our room luxurious, but the surrounding decor of the hotel was exactly what I needed to get my creative juices flowing for this antique buying trip.

The Goodwood Hotel is decorated with period antiques, and every room is pure eye candy.

The spaces are really excellent representations of classic English style, and so let's take a minute to pick apart what we are seeing here.

Here are photos from two of the main parlor areas.

Let's take just a minute to notice the trends:

🔅 Lots of patterns, on wallpaper, upholstery, and drapery.

🔅 Thoughtful lighting with the placement of table lamps and sconces

🔅 Original art hung in collage or gallery style

🔅 Extra warmth added through dark woods, pottery, and baskets.

These are the hallmarks of classic English style.

If you want to recreate this look in your own space, you can focus on adding similar elements.

👉 Ditch the overhead lighting and add table lamps with patterned shades to every side table and surface.

👉 Embrace pattern and color. Start with a neutral background (walls and floor) and layer in coordinating colors through furniture, pillows, rugs, and wall hangings.

👉 Plates and original art are you go-to wall decor, and the more the better! Arrange in a symmetrical pattern to frame architectural features like fireplaces, windows, and doorways.

👉 Don't be afraid to mix a feminine with more masculine aesthetic. Notice the ruffled skirts on the red chairs, paired with the angular metal coffee table. They work together in a refreshing way.

👉 Baskets provide extra texture to space and also storage, an easy place to drop magazines, blankets, or seasonal decor items you swap around.

While I have always decorated more with cool colors, I'm finding myself drawn to the warmth of these spaces.

They look like rooms where I would want to cozy up with a cup of coffee and a good book, and with everything going on in the world right now, doesn't that seem appealing?

I do think after a decade + of the "gray and white" minimalist style dominating the scene, we are starting to see a shift back to softness, color, and texture in spaces.
